Hi, I'm Jeremy Garnett, and I am the sole-operator and editor of Top End Editing.

Since 2015, I have provided editing for a wide range of primarily academic clients on theses and exegeses, scientific papers and governmental reports, book chapters and online teaching units. I have also worked on several reference books, a dictionary, festival programs, and numerous booklets and magazine, and a couple of very esoteric novels. I am thus well-versed in the practicalities of publication, including reference management, formatting, and the associated submission processes.

You can find many of these listed in my Bibliography, though I am constantly behind keeping track of the list. I would much rather be editing the next report or thesis for the next client, then updating a website with old details - website QA was a past I left behind, but which introduced me to editing.

Utilising my high level of familiarity with the complexities of the English language, I work to ensure you put your best words forward, gain a favourable place in the world of publication, and improve your own English skills along the way.

Basically, what this means is that I am fluent in several varieties of the English language - academic, informational, defined, fictive and, to a certain extent, colloquial. I can guide you through the differences and help you better understand how your writing will be perceived by your target audience, or can be adapted to fit a new context, a new medium.

The formal stance of a PhD thesis may not, for instance, fit within the word count or style guide of an scientific journal, nor be understood by the general public, if you want to publish it as a book. So, in those instances, we would adapt the original document to fit the new medium, perhaps changing the grammar or removing procedural methods in favour of a broader timeline. Yet, as we adapt your work, my primary goal is to keep your voice, even if the words you use to communicate it change.

Though I am an editor by trade, I am a poet at heart, and am as practiced at enforcing grammatical strictures as I am at discarding them altogether. It all depends on the context, and the expectations of your audience.

Can you tell how passionate about my craft?

I am just as passionate about learning new things, with reading my hobby as much as it is my job. My expertise is the English language. What is said in it is up to you - I just hope you will ask me to read it.

Further to my being a poet, I write for my own delight in the doing, though also occasionally perform at open-mic or solitary events or as part of a festival. I have self-published several books, and had individual poems and short stories published internationally.

Previously, I've run festival volunteers, pollinated broccoli, mustered cattle, extracted mango kernels from their seeds, performed in cabaret, theatre and dance, been a fry cook and washed a lifetime's supply of dishes. Chances are there's jobs I've forgotten about. Now, I'm a freelance editor, enjoy what I do, and reckon this is me for the long haul.

It's almost a return. Both my parents were biologists, and I grew up largely in the field, involved in measuring tree DBH (diameter at breast height), and speaking with PhD students round the kitchen table. Then, on the long car journeys, there wasn't much else to do but read.

Words are my life.

I still read for pleasure, but now find myself caught up on the speedbumps of spelling errors and grammatical issues. My aim, then, must be to catch such before they ever reach the reader. If we both learn something along the way, all the better - if there's a consistent issue, I'll explain it, and explain why I change what I do.

Anyhow, that's me.
